I enjoyed the Japanese Chestnut Fair and Muscat Fair at Kyobashi Sembikiya Fruit Parlor located on the 6th floor of Odakyu Department Store Shinjuku Main Building.
In the Japanese chestnut fair, you can order the “Japanese chestnut parfait” for 2,592 yen and the “Muscat parfait” for 2,592 yen. There were also sandwiches made with Japanese chestnuts, waffles, and muscat yogurt parfait, etc. The restaurant was quite crowded on a Thursday evening.
Too many parfaits, too much to eat! For those who can’t finish too many parfaits, the Half Plus Parfait is popular, which is half the size and comes with a drink instead.
If you are a man, a half parfait may not be enough for you, so if you want to eat a lot of parfait, I recommend you to get a regular size parfait with a drink.
You can choose from black tea, coffee, or fruit tea, and the drinks are served in a pot, so you can have plenty. I enjoyed the tea, but it was not Indian (Darjeeling or Assam) or Ceylon tea, but Kenyan, so I think they used Lipton Gold Blend.
I ordered a half parfait, and it was small, cute, and easy to eat. The Japanese chestnuts were a thick marron paste with a marron glacé-like substance next to it. I thought they put boiled chestnuts on top, but they were cooked with sugar and had a slight bitterness left in the sweetness, very tasty!
Underneath the cream, there was coffee jelly, and the whole thing was well balanced. This flavor would go well with cappuccino or any other coffee and milk-like drink.
Next was the Muscat, a ripe, high-sugar Shine Muscat with cream on top. Even though the sugar content is high, it is not overly sweet, and the muscat is fresh and full of water. You will be offered one of the following: Shine Muscat, Seto Giants, or Muscat of Alexandria.
After all, the most delightful is the Muscat of Alexandria from Okayama Prefecture.
It has a musky aroma and an elegant, understated sweetness that makes it the king of muscats.
Other than the parfait, the fruit sandwiches and afternoon tea set seemed to be popular, and I saw a group of four people having a girls’ night out, chatting and eating.
If you are selfish enough to eat plenty of sweets, you can also have cake for an extra charge.
There are more than five kinds of cakes in the store even in the evening, and you can enjoy the cakes with plenty of fruits selected by Kyobashi Sembikiya. On the other hand, if you don’t like cream or are an elderly person, I recommend you to have something less sweet such as jelly or fruit.
Japanese chestnut fair and Muscat fair, limited time only, so don’t delay!
