I want to move and live in the Shibuya area! Here are some recommendations for people in their 20s and 30s who live alone.
Shoto
Shoto is a high-class residential area just a few minutes’ walk from Bunka-mura, next to the Tokyu Main Store. It is in a great location, within walking distance of Dogenzaka, where Shibuya 109 is located.
There are many mansions with floor space of over 200 tsubos, making it a quiet residential area that you would not expect to find in Shibuya.
This area is often thought of as very expensive, but in Shoto, which is closer to Komaba, there are apartments for single people that are surprisingly affordable, with studio rooms in the 80,000-100,000 yen range and 1DK in the 140,000 yen range.
However, it is difficult to say whether it is a good place to live since people tend to eat out.
Omotesando
The area around Omotesando and Minami Aoyama is dotted with trendy specialty stores and fashion brands that seem to hide in plain sight. Surprisingly, there are many apartment buildings, and if you go into the back streets, you will find many designer apartments. There are some old-fashioned houses, but more apartments.
Unfortunately, rents are very high in this very popular area, ranging from 130,000 to 140,000 yen for a small studio of around 20 square meters, and 180,000 yen for a studio of 30 square meters.
If you want to live in a 1LDK apartment, you will have to pay 250,000 yen to 280,000 yen. If you look at the top of the list, a two bedroom apartment costs 400,000 to 500,000 yen, and a household income of nearly 20 million yen is needed for two people to live together.
Ebisu
Near Shibuya, perfect for those who want to live alone and keep costs low.
It’s a bit far to walk to Shibuya station (20-30 minutes), but it’s very close (5-10 minutes by cab). By bicycle, if the roads are clear, you can get there in a little over 10 minutes.
A studio room in a 50-year-old building can be rented for as little as 60,000 yen, and a decent, slightly clean apartment can be rented for 80,000-100,000 yen, which is quite reasonable for the Shibuya area. There are also many inexpensive restaurants, making it a good choice for 20-somethings who want to move to Tokyo and have fun. However, on rainy days, the whole town smells like sewage, so it is not a pleasant place to take a walk. There are also a lot of pigeons in the area, and some apartments have nets or are covered in their droppings, so please be careful when choosing a place to live.
Shinsen-cho
Next to Shoto, there are many apartments for single people here, and you can rent a studio for 80,000-100,000 yen. It is known as the “back Shibuya” and is a mature Shibuya with many trendy and hidden restaurants. You can also walk to Shibuya station, so it’s very convenient and affordable. If you don’t want to go to Ebisu, I recommend Shinsen-cho.
Setagaya Mishuku
Beyond Ikejiri-Ohashi, this area is a bit noisy with lots of cars, but it is quite inexpensive. It’s only 10 minutes away by bicycle, so it’s recommended for men who want to live cheaply.
From 70,000 yen for a studio, you can live in a beautiful apartment for 100,000 yen.
Conclusion
So, the market price is 70,000 to 100,000 yen for a studio room in a shabby building, 100,000 to 140,000 yen for a studio room in a slightly clean and secure apartment, and 150,000 to 200,000 yen for 1DK and 1LDK. In my case, Tokyo Gas, Tokyo Electric Power, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Waterworks Bureau charge a total of 7,000 yen to 10,000 yen per month. Please take these into consideration when you think about it.
